YONKERS RACEWAY ANNOUNCES DICK MCGUIRE TROT FOR THREE YEAR OLD COLTS & GELDINGS BRED IN NEW YORK STATE SET FOR FRIDAY NIGHT, AUGUST 20, WITH A PURSE IN EXCESS OF $100,000, REMEMERING KNICKS LEGEND AND NBA HALL OF FAMER, RACING WAS HIS SECOND LOVE TO BASKETBALL
New York, March 16—Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway is pleased to announce that the inaugural Dick McGuire Trot, which will remember the legendary Knicks guard and NBA Hall of Famer, will be contested on Friday night, August 20, at the historic Hilltop half mile oval. The New York Sires Stakes event for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters will have an estimated purse in excess of $100,000. The announcement was made today by raceway President Timothy J. Rooney.
Born in the Bronx, a product of the Rockaways, and a long time Dix Hills, Long Island resident, McGuire was a part of the Knicks organization for 53 seasons as a player, coach and scout. The St. John’s University star was one of the most selfless players in NBA history. The deft-passing McGuire was a five-time NBA All-Star and led the Knicks to three straight NBA Finals in the fifties. His number 15 was retired to the Madison Square Garden rafters in 1992, and he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame the following year.
McGuire’s legend, along with his historic NBA career, includes his love of horse racing, spending memorable times at racetracks across the country during his travels as a player, coach and scout, including Yonkers Raceway. “We are truly delighted and privileged to honor one of New York’s greatest sportsmen, and an avid racing fan, with the inauguration of the Dick McGuire Trot,” said Rooney. “Yonkers Raceway looks forward to hosting the event for many years to come, and to having his family, friends and many fans at our historic track during the height of our summer stakes season.”
McGuire was remembered yesterday at Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City, where the inaugural “Halligan-McGuire Irish American Sports Good Guy Awards” were presented. The awards pay tribute to McGuire and John Halligan, the beloved Rangers/NHL public relations executive, historian and author. The honorees were: Teri McGuire, Dick’s loving wife of 54 years; John Flaherty, former Yankee and YES Network analyst; Janet Halligan, John’s loving wife of 41 years; and Dave Maloney, the MSG Network-1050 ESPN Radio analyst and former Rangers’ captain.
